Joëlle Fanghanel

Joëlle is Director (Research & Policy in Higher Education) of the Centre for Educational and Academic Practices at City University London. She advises on academic matters across the university and has a consultative role on teaching and learning cross-university initiatives. She is also involved in an expert capacity on Educational Development issues at international level, via specialized seminars and workshops. Her specific remit at City is Research and Policy in Higher Education.

She has extensive experience of HE teaching, programme direction, innovative curricula, supervision, project management and policy development. She is involved in educational development at national and international level, with a record of publication and conference papers on educational matters. She is a reviewer for Studies in Higher Education , Higher Education Quarterly , and Perspectives in Education, co-editor of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Proceedings , Volumes 2 and 3, e. She is the Convener and Chair of the editorial board for the London Scholarship of Teaching and Learning International Conference. She has undertaken a number of international consultancies on Quality Enhancement in Higher Education.

Her research interests include innovation in teaching & assessment, e-pedagogies, professional development, research and teaching linkage, disciplines in higher education, HE policy and change management. Her PhD was completed at Lancaster University and examined the impact of context on pedagogical constructs and the implications for strategic educational development input.

She has a record of publications on educational issues in refereed publications outlets and has presented widely at international conferences, both in English and in French. Recent publications include a chapter on teaching excellence, and a chapter on socio-cultural approaches to teaching, learning and assessment, a chapter on departmental leadership and papers on professional development and local interpretations of policy. A book on teacher preparation for teaching in HE in also in preparation.
